Recruiting Workers

Jessica D. Mathews of the Scranton Times had a three-part series this week on the practices of Maxi Staff, an employment firm that recruits workers for meat processing plants across the nation. The company recruits heavily in Puerto Rico, and Mathews writes that “complaints have been lodged in Scranton, Allentown, Bethlehem, Lewistown, Reading and Harrisonburg” about the companies’ rules, which leave the impression that workers may not leave their jobs until their debts (for travel costs) to Maxi Staff are paid off, lower-than-promised pay and poor living conditions.
