Your Neighbor’s Tax Bill

Matt Waite and Joni James of the St. Petersburg Times used local property data to show that “boom towns and high growth areas pay taxes on a far higher percentage of home value than do more established neighborhoods. In other words, the new growth so often criticized for not paying for itself is shouldering a higher portion of the tax burden than established neighborhoods.” The paper analyzed more than 700,000 properties in West-Central Florida to show the successes and failures of Florida’s Save Our Homes constitutional amendment, which sometimes results in similar homes in the same neighborhood having wildly different values for tax purposes. An online map shows the spread of tax burdens in the Tampa Bay area. Also, be sure to check out Matt on camera for this report from Tampa Bay’s 10 News.
