Wanted: Intern

December 22nd, 2007  |  Published in Work  |  3 Comments

The Interactive News Technology group that I just joined at nytimes.com is looking for an intern for next summer. From the description:

Become part of our recently formed Interactive News Technology team and you will work side-by-side with our reporters and editors, using technology to stretch the boundaries of online journalism. Just a few of the exciting tools you will help us develop and implement include non-linear storytelling through maps, dynamic graphics, searchable databases and documents, downloadable data, visualizations and other dynamic applications. We do this with a variety of technologies, including Ruby/Rails, JavaScript, Flash and MySQL. Successful intern candidates combine technology smarts with journalistic sensibilities.

Sure, I’m biased, but this is a great group of people to work with, and maybe best of all you won’t have me bugging you for candy as I do with most interns, since I’ll be working from home most of the time. Seriously, this is a great opportunity to be a part of a new and growing enterprise at The Times. If you’re interested, let me know or apply online.

It’s wonderful that NYTimes is taking this seriously.

I’m surprised the NYTimes is open to Rails development.

I think this techno-journalism movement is killer. One of the secondary beauties of it all is that since you’re posting information in a more normalized format, it opens the doors for other folks to scrap and utilize your data.

Mason, you should check out Open.
